dr. emilio arguello explains why dentistry

Why Dentistry

Dr. Arguello begins to see what he wants to do with his life and elaborates why he chose dentistry. “Dentistry is one of the professions that not only allow you to practice in a very similar manner no matter where you are in the world but everybody has very similar problems. Also, it’s a profession that can give you the opportunity to give back to people and to help them in their journey”.

Sharing Knowledge With Future Generation

“There’s a lot of talent out there that is not in the education perspective but I will perhaps invite a lot of these colleagues that have the talent, to share it back to the community because it’s an important thing to do for the newer generations too. If you have a gift of knowledge to give it back to the near generations.”

dr. emilio arguello describes the two sides of digital dentistry v1

The Two Sides of Digital Dentistry

A two-edged sword, it’s got some good positives and some challenges that they’re having to wade through and figure out.

What is a Periodontist

Periodontics is a specialty that initially originated to target and treat periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is probably the number one disease in the oral environment in all of our communities throughout the world that leads to tooth loss. Not only tooth loss, it also leads to systemic complications and there’s a lot of research that correlates the oral with a systemic connection.

dr. emilio arguello explains what is a periodontist v1
dr. maurice salama describes to matt griffin what is an educated patient v1

Varying Degrees of Periodontal Disease

There are different stages of the disease. The problem is that we all have the same bacteria. The host cannot sometimes cope with those bacteria.

Diagnosing Periodontal Disease

As a patient, you have no idea that we have it because it’s a disease that doesn’t hurt. Once in a while you notice a little bit of bleeding while brushing your teeth.

dr. maurice salama tells matt griffin that you can't afford to do it wrong v1
matt griffin talks with dr. arguello about who brushes after every meal v1

Who Brushes After Every Meal

The reality of people having a toothbrush in their pocket that they’re going to use after every meal is pretty slim.

Periodontal Disease Hygiene Appointment Frequency

How often should you go, at least if you’re in the beginning stages of periodontal disease? How often should you go to that hygienist?

matt griffin talks with dr. arguello about who brushes after every meal v2
dr. emilio arguello describes the importance of surgical intervention for periodontal disease v1.

Surgical Intervention for Periodontal Disease

The surgical intervention for periodontal disease has two ways to treat it.

Periodontal-Disease-and-Uncontrolled-Diabetes

Let’s say our patients are diabetic. Diabetes, unfortunately, prevents the ability of the body to respond to bacteria invasion.

matt griffin interviews dr. emilio arguello about periodontal disease and uncontrolled diabetes 2. v1
dr. emilio arguello answers the complications with nicotine and implants v1.

Complications With Nicotine and Implants

The nicotine itself reduces the oxygen tension in your body.

Cleaning – Temp to Final

“You have to learn how to clean it. You have to learn how to use it.”

matt griffin talks to dr. arguello about cleaning temp to final v1
transperant treatment and maintainance plan described by dr. emilio arguello to matt griffin v1.

Transparent Treatment and Maintenance Plan

“Everything comes from that first appointment because we are very transparent with the patients and say there is a cost of treatment on the market costs for this treatment. But once you’ve got through this treatment and you have to understand that there is a maintenance phase.”

Importance of Follow Up Appointments

“If you’ve never seen the patient for six months after you did the procedure, how do you know the patient is doing a good job or not doing a good job?”

matt griffin talks about the importance of follow-up appointments v1.
matt griffin talks about the open line of communication v1.

Open Line of Communication

Trust and confidence in the communication or the portal of communication between the patient and the clinician are important. If the patient is comfortable asking the clinician or if the clinician is the one who dictates the treatment and doesn’t give the patient the opportunity to ask questions, then maybe it’s not a good fit.

Interviewing the Clinician

What would be some of those questions during the interview from the clinician’s side that you would recommend a patient should ask?

dr. emilio arguello explains the tailor treatment plan for every patient with matt griffin v1

Tailored Treatment Plan for Every Patient

“What are your concerns? I have to be able to translate that into my mind and tailor the treatment, whatever the treatment will be. I have to tailor that to you, so it’s not one-size-fits-all or one-size-fits-most, it is I need to tailor it to what your expectations are.”

Importance of Empathy Towards Patient

“We cannot spend an hour with patients all the time but enough that you are able to have that portal of communication. I think that’s the very minimum that we, the clinicians, can do for our patients. To open ourselves up to having at least that question-and-answer session. To be able to explore that, it may take five, ten or fifteen minutes but that’s at least what we always see. Other than that, for the rest of that, you can open the door for many other questions.”

cannabis and dentistry explained by dr. emilio arguello v1

Cannabis and Dentistry

“Does it hurt, help or it doesn’t matter when it comes to periodontal disease if you’re smoking cannabis?”

All-On-4 to 6 Patient Life Change

“If you think that procedure like this is going to be a life-changing event for you, do it. If you don’t believe in it, even if you have all the money in the world, don’t do it.”

dr. emilio arguello explains patient life change v1
dr. emilio arguello describes shame and waiting with matt griffin v1.

Shame and Waiting

“Don’t wait. Because, if we end up losing our teeth at a younger age, unfortunately, bone and mother nature do not help us along the journey and the bone will continue to be reduced in volume. It might be too late. I mean, it might require a very heavy surgical intervention to reveal some of the bone that you’ve lost, so don’t wait.”
